THE INSCRIBE RESIDENCY

20 writers • One week • One post a day

About

The Inscribe Residency is a retreat for writers, thinkers, and creatives who have something to say and just need the time, space, (and a push!) to say it.

You'll publish one piece of writing a day for five days, minimum 500 words each, by 11:59pm each night, about whatever you want.

  • When: Sat, Aug 29th – Sat, Sep 5th, 2026
  • Location: Casa Tilo, Arenys de Munt, Barcelona
  • Cost: We expect this to come to EUR 700–1k per person (TBC)
    • This covers: 1 shared room between 2–4 people; 3 meals a day
    • Not included: travel to/from Casa Tilo

Who's It For?

Bloggers, poets, novelists, lurkers, researchers, aspiring essayists — ultimately, anyone with a voice who's been wanting to write more publicly.

We're primarily targeting people living in Europe for this residency — in the hopes of building a community of Europe-based writers.

Why?

A space to create. We (Chiara & Sofia) love to write, and felt we were missing spaces to gather with other writers, exchange ideas, and get the push to share. We also think there are gems of voices out there that just need the right container to come alive.

Human expression. As most online writing regresses toward a GPT-sounding mean, we're excited to make room for novel, honest human expression.

Civilizational sensemaking. Writing is thinking, and sharing that thinking is a public good: it helps us understand ourselves, each other, and the world around us.

Why Europe? The online blogosphere remains predominantly American, and we'd love to see more European voices contributing to these spaces.

Local community. Local community is becoming increasingly important to sustain us through uncertain times, and we hope this residency will be a first step in building one for writers here in Europe.

What You'll Get

  • Time to focus
  • Space to hone your craft
  • A chance to be part of a community of writers
  • At least five new publications under your name
  • Possible mentorship from more experienced writers (we're working on this!)

If this pilot is successful, we'd be excited to grow this into multiple residencies per year — some thematic, and longer residencies with returning alumni.

Each day, participants are expected to have one post of at least 500 words published to the platform of their choice, before midnight — no exceptions!

FAQ

I've submitted an application. When will I hear back?
We expect to confirm your attendance by the end of June.
Do I actually have to be from Europe to join?
Anyone who is living, working, or studying in Europe, or otherwise has a meaningful connection to Europe, is welcome to apply.
Why 500 words?
Long enough to have a point, short enough to be achievable every day for a week.
Where do I publish?
We're flexible, as long as it's online and public. Substack, your own blog, a website. You'll have to send us the link as proof every day :)
What if I don't manage to publish by midnight?
We'll ask you to leave, no refunds. Sorry! We think a minimum of 500 words a day is very achievable though…
What if I would like to publish more than five pieces during my time there?
Go for it, as long as one post per day is at least 500 words long.
Can I come to the residency with five or more drafts ready?
A few drafts or ideas are fine to bring, but we'd prefer you don't come with fully finished pieces, and that at least one piece gets fully ideated and written during your time there, so you can connect to what feels most alive for you during the week.
Do I have to write in English?
Ideally, we'd all write in English so our work reaches a wider audience and everyone at the residency can engage with each other's pieces.
Do I have to follow the schedule each day?
Not necessarily, as long as you publish daily and join some of the shared group meals, the days are yours. Casa Tilo sits in a natural park, so there's plenty of room for walks, runs, and hikes.
What if I can't make the full residency, or need to arrive or leave early?
We ask that you commit to the full period. We feel it's important to have a shared container, and for everyone to be fully present from start to end.
Can I work while I'm there?
We'd prefer you didn't, because this might take away from socializing with your fellow residents. But if you really have to, we won't stop you, as long as you can publish one 500-word post a day.
What if I can't afford the ticket fee?
We encourage you to apply anyway. We don't want price to be a barrier, and if we're excited to have you there, we'll do our best to make it work.
Can I donate to support the cause?
Yes! There will be a "supporter ticket" option for attendees, which will help us offer spaces to those who otherwise couldn't attend. If you'd like to donate and not attend, please reach out to us at inscribe.residency@gmail.com. We don't have any funding to run this project, so any amount of support is welcome.
Is this part of the Inkhaven residency?
No, this is entirely separate from the Inkhaven residency, though we were inspired by their model!

Contact & Support

The Inscribe Residency is being run by Chiara and Sofia, with support from the lovely folks at Casa Tilo.

We don't have any funding to run this project, so any amount of support is welcome — and would help reduce ticket costs for the residency + help allow lower-income participants to join.

To donate, or for any questions, you can get in touch at inscribe.residency@gmail.com.
